The Saving Lives HIV Kit
This kit uses a self taken “finger prick” blood sample collected onto our specialised dried blood spot (DBS) collection system. The sample is then analysed in the professional “state of the art” Public Health England (PHE) laboratories using 4th Generation HIV antigen antibody technology. Your results are reviewed by PHE expert virologists to ensure you receive the most accurate results.
The Saving Lives HIV and Hepatitis Kit (Dried Blood Spot)
This kit will test you for HIV but in addition it will test for antibodies to the Hepatitis B and C viruses. The advantage of using our our specialised dried blood spot (DBS) collection system is that it requires a smaller amount of blood, than commonly used “Mini-tubes” and the dried sample remains stable for over a week. If you come from a country where Hepatitis B and C are common you should get tested for these treatable viruses.
The HIV INSTI ® Self Test kit by Biolytical
INSTI® HIV Self Test is designed as a single-use HIV test kit that allows you to get results in the comfort of your home. The test can detect HIV antibodies from about three weeks after exposure, but it can take some people up to three months to fully develop HIV antibodies. we recommend you repeat the test again in three months to ensure you are as safe as possible. We maintain a 9am to 5pm helpline, manned Monday to Friday by expert, NHS-trained health advisors. They will be able to give you any help and support you require, either before or after taking this test.
About The Tests
Our HIV test kits will test for both HIV antigen and HIV antibodies. This means that the test will correctly identify over 95% of new HIV infections within four weeks (one month) of exposure and 99.7% after twelve weeks (three months).
If you think you have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours, you should contact your local Sexual Health Clinic or your local A&E department to see if you may need Post Exposure Prophylaxis after Sexual Exposure (often called PEP or PEPSE).
If you have taken a risk more recently than four weeks ago you should repeat these tests in four weeks and again at three months.
Not everyone routinely tests for Hepatitis B & C, but if you wish, these tests can be added to any of our available kits. These tests require a small sample of blood from a finger prick. They are recommended for people:
- From an area with a high prevalence of Hepatitis B & C;
- Who have injected drugs or shared needles and other injecting equipment;
- Who have had a blood transfusion or medical care abroad;
- Who have had unprotected sex with multiple sexual partners.
All of our samples are tested in the laboratories run by Public Health England (PHE) in Birmingham. These laboratories have passed the very highest accreditation standards (CPA ISO 15189:2012), so you can be confident of the test results you receive. Our HIV tests are 4th Generation, and are performed using Abbot Architect™ technology.
